About TakeoutReader

What Is TakeoutReader?

TakeoutReader is an online tool that converts Google Takeout data exports into clear, human-readable reports. When you download your data from Google Takeout (takeout.google.com), you receive ZIP files filled with JSON, MBOX, and HTML files that are nearly impossible to read without technical knowledge. TakeoutReader solves this by automatically parsing those files and presenting your data in plain English.

What Data Can TakeoutReader Analyze?

TakeoutReader currently supports analysis of the following Google Takeout data categories:

  • Google Location History: See the places you've visited, countries traveled, main cities, and most active years of location tracking.
  • Google Search Activity: View your total search count, most active search periods, and types of searches performed.
  • YouTube Watch History: See how many videos you've watched, your most active viewing year, total likes, and comments posted.
  • Chrome Browsing Data: View your total page visits and most visited websites from Chrome sync data.
  • Android App Activity: Review your Android app usage records and most frequently used apps.
  • Gmail Statistics: See the total number of emails in your Gmail archive.

How Does TakeoutReader Work?

TakeoutReader uses client-side JavaScript to read and parse your Google Takeout ZIP file directly in your web browser. The process works in three simple steps:

  1. Download your Google Takeout: Go to takeout.google.com, select the data you want to export, and download the ZIP file.
  2. Upload to TakeoutReader: Drag and drop your ZIP file onto takeoutreader.com. The file is processed entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
  3. Get your readable report: TakeoutReader generates a clear report showing all the data Google has collected about you. Export it as PDF, text, Markdown, or CSV.

Why Was TakeoutReader Created?

Google Takeout gives users the ability to download their personal data, but the exported files are in formats designed for machines, not humans. Most users who download their Google data are left with hundreds of JSON files they can't read. TakeoutReader was created to bridge this gap — making personal data accessible to everyone, regardless of technical skill.

With growing awareness of digital privacy and data rights (including GDPR in Europe and various state-level privacy laws in the US), more people want to understand what data companies like Google have collected about them. TakeoutReader makes this possible without requiring coding knowledge or installing any software.

Privacy-First Architecture

TakeoutReader was designed with a privacy-first architecture. Unlike other data analysis tools that require uploading files to a server, TakeoutReader processes everything locally in your browser using the JSZip JavaScript library. Your Google Takeout data never leaves your device. There is no server-side processing, no data storage, and no Google account login required.

Pricing

TakeoutReader offers a free preview of your Google Takeout data. To access the full detailed report with all data categories and multiple export formats (PDF, text, Markdown, CSV), there is a one-time payment of $7 USD. There is no subscription, no recurring charges, and no hidden fees. Payment is processed securely via Stripe.

Supported Formats & Compatibility

TakeoutReader works in all modern web browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It is compatible with Google Takeout exports in ZIP format and supports both desktop and mobile devices. For large exports (over 2GB), a desktop computer is recommended for optimal performance.
